The Wagner paramilitary group in Russia denied recruiting Serbs to fight in Ukraine on Friday, a day after campaigners in Belgrade filed criminal complaints against the outfit.

Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko, the Russian ambassador to Serbia, and Aleksandar Vulin, the director of Serbia’s state security and information agency, were also mentioned in the allegations.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Wagner, declared in a statement that he “does not recruit Serbs” and claimed he was never the leader of Botsan-Kharchenko or Vulin.

Russian efforts to get Serbs to fight alongside Wagner forces should end, according to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic earlier this week. He said that Serbian-language adverts for the Wagner group soliciting recruits were being published on Russian websites and social media platforms.

The United States announced new sanctions against the Wagner Group on Friday, accusing it of supplying Russia with North Korean weapons for use in the Ukraine conflict—a charge Wagner denies—and of enlisting Russian inmates to fight.
