Police in Bangladesh report that on Sunday, a bus crashed through a highway railing and into a ditch, killing at least 19 people and injuring up to 25 more.
The bus fell 30 feet (9 meters) into the ditch about 8:00 a.m. (0200 GMT), according to the police, who believe the driver lost control and hit the railing of a freshly constructed major motorway.
“The death toll has risen to 19. At least 12 people were critically injured. They have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital,” local police chief Masud Alam told the media after the crash in the southern district of Shibchar.
Due to outdated and improperly maintained vehicles, roads, and drivers, road accidents are common in Bangladesh.
In Bangladesh last year, a record 9,951 persons died in traffic accidents, according to the Bangladeshi Passengers’ Welfare Association.
