RAWALPINDI: PML-N candidate Raja Sagheer Ahmed has retained the PP-7 Rawalpindi constituency after the final election results were announced.

PML-N candidate Raja Sagheer Ahmed emerged victorious from the constituency by a thin margin of 49 votes in the Punjab by-polls held on July 17.

Raja Sagheer had won the seat with 68,906 votes, whereas PTI candidate Colonel (retired) Shabbir Awan managed to bag 68,857 votes. After the final results were announced, Raja Sagheer secured 68,981 votes while PTI’s Shabbir Awan has 68,863 votes.

The final results have been released by the returning officer and have been received by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). According to reports, Form 49 has also been sent to the commission after scrutiny of rejected votes.

The election commission has sent a notice to the residences of candidates for scrutiny of votes. The ECP eventually issued a notification over the victory of PML-N candidate Raja Sagheer Ahmed.

Earlier, the ECP has dismissed a plea by the PTI seeking a recount of votes in the PP-7 Rawalpindi by-election, saying the party failed to prove rigging.

PTI candidate Shabbir Awan filed approached the ECP seeking a recount of votes for the constituency by losing by thin margin.

A five-member ECP bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja heard the plea. The ECP bench announced the verdict saying the petitioner could not prove rigging and also failed to prove the need to recount vote.

PTI candidate Awan’s plea for a recount of votes was rejected by the returning officer (RO) of the constituency. However, the LHC Rawalpindi bench ordered the ECP to stop the issuance of results and resolve the matter.

Following the narrow margin of defeat, the PTI candidate challengd the results and filed an application for a recount of votes in the constituency.

During the Punjab by-polls, PTI won at least 15 out of 20 constituencies, while PML-N only clinched four while an independent candidate managed secure one seat.
