Rishi Sunak will be on the ballot to become the next prime minister
Despite not having formally declared his desire to compete, Rishi Sunak is said to have surged ahead in the most recent race to No. 10.
It’s thought that the former chancellor was the first Conservative to win the support of 100 MPs.
There can only be a maximum of three candidates announced on Monday because there are presently 357 Tory MPs.
It’s believed that Penny Mordaunt, who was the first to declare her candidacy for prime minister to succeed Liz Truss, has 18 supporters.
She said in a statement that her efforts to “unite our country” had been “encouraged by support from colleagues.”
While everything is going on, Boris Johnson, who has informed allies he is “up for it,” has 48 supporters.
He was apparently returning from his vacation in the Dominican Republic overnight in order to enter the contest for No. 10 and try a remarkable comeback.
The former prime minister reportedly heard “one or two boos” on his trip yesterday night, according to Sky News.
Before the deadline on Monday, Mr. Sunak’s supporters claimed on Friday night that he had gathered enough votes to clear the threshold.
However, despite their turbulent past, he has been urged by some Conservatives to “get back together” with Mr. Johnson.
Before the ex-shocking Chancellor’s resignation in July, the two had fought bitterly about taxation.
It caused a chain reaction of resignations that finally made Mr. Johnson’s fate possible.
‘If the Tories are serious about winning in 2024 and want to prevent a general election before then, they need to revert to the guy with a mandate who is a seasoned campaigner,’ an associate of the former prime minister told the Telegraph.
They require a fighter to confront Labor.
There is no use going to a yellow box junction if you do not know how to exit it. Rishi needs to get in touch with her so they can figure out how to reconcile.
Unless one withdraws, two candidates will be put up to the Tory membership for voting on Monday. The results will be made public on Friday.
Six Cabinet members, including Ben Wallace, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Simon Clarke, Chris Heaton-Harris, Alok Sharma, and Anne-Marie Trevelyan, publicly endorsed Mr. Johnson.
It happened as Lord William Hague, a former leader of the Conservative Party, issued a warning that the party would enter a “death spiral” if he returned.
A Johnson administration would pose greater market risks, according to Berenberg Bank analysts.
