Sonnet for Anne Frank considers the “terrible contrast” between the journal’s optimistic spirit and her destiny 75 years after Diary of a Young Girl was published.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the publication of Anne Frank’s diary, former children’s laureate Michael Rosen has created a brand-new poem.

Sonnet for Anne Frank is the name of the poem; according to Rosen, he chose this format because sonnets have “a particular kind of dignity” and provide you “time to ponder.” In the poem, Rosen addresses Frank directly, writing, “You packed so much life into that loft,” but each time we read, we “battle to savour / your love of life while knowing how it ended.”

According to Rosen, “I’ve got an unresolved dilemma. You’re reading a person who is so vibrant and so full of hope and life’s details and concerns from the point of view of a teenager, but it’s virtually impossible to read it without thinking about her horrible fate.”

“Therefore, there is a terrible paradox between the diary’s living spirit and your knowledge.

“The reader is given room in [the poem] to ponder that paradox, which is in its own peculiar manner pretty distressing. ”

On June 12, 1942, Frank turned 13 and received a blank diary. She wrote in it while her family and she were hiding in a hidden annex above her father Otto’s place of employment in Amsterdam.

Otto’s assistant Miep Gies discovered the diary in the annexe after the Nazis learned about the family. Otto, the only member of the family to have survived the Holocaust, received it from Gies after the war, and he decided to publish it as Anne had requested. The title of the book was The Diary of a Young Girl when it was translated from Dutch to English.
