Istanbul: Rescue crews race against time to free victims of collapsed apartment building
On Sunday, emergency workers were attempting to rescue people trapped under a collapsed apartment building in Istanbul.
TV images depicted firefighters manually shifting rubble from the flattened three-story building in Kucukcekmece on the city’s European side. The broadcaster reported that they had pulled two injured people from the debris.
The structure collapsed at 8:40 a.m. local time (0545 GMT), as stated by the Istanbul governor’s office. The cause was not immediately clear.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of southern Turkiye and neighboring Syria last year, resulting in the deaths of more than 59,000 people. The disaster highlighted the poor enforcement of building regulations in Turkiye.
