In an effort to enhance waste management and sanitation, the Punjab government is set to privatize its sanitation operations and introduce a garbage tax in 110 tehsils within 36 districts.

The provincial cabinet’s finance and development committee has given the green light for this tax, which will be levied on all households, including those in underprivileged areas, as well as commercial entities throughout Punjab.

Village homes measuring between five to ten marlas will incur a monthly garbage tax of Rs200. In contrast, larger establishments like factories, businesses, and petrol stations will be taxed Rs700 each month.

The exact delineation of responsibilities for waste disposal, whether it will be the government or property owners, is yet to be clarified.

The introduction of this tax is part of a strategy to foster a cleaner provincial environment and more efficient waste management practices.
