Angelina Jolie is making a remarkable return to acting with her role as opera legend Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s biographical film Maria. The portrayal has already earned her nominations for the 2025 Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards, with Oscar buzz also swirling around her performance.
In a recent interview with E! News, Jolie, 49, opened up about the challenges that led to her years-long hiatus from acting. “I went very dark for reasons I’d rather not explain, but I didn’t have a lot of light and life within me,” she shared. Reflecting on that period, she added, “Your light’s dim.”
The actor explained that her focus during this time was on her family, including her six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt, and that personal struggles often dictated her career choices. “The choice of what to work on and when was not a creative choice, often, the last few years, but sometimes the practical choice,” she admitted.
Jolie described Maria as a turning point in her healing journey. “Maria was the beginning of starting to come alive again,” she said. She credited the support of loved ones, noting, “I needed a lot of kind people around me to hold my hand.”
Jolie’s return also highlighted her family’s creative involvement. Daughter Vivienne assisted with The Outsiders musical, while sons Maddox and Pax worked as production assistants on Maria.
