NDMA issues flood alert for multiple regions amid Heavy Rain forecast

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for several parts of the country as heavy monsoon rains are expected between August 13 and 15.

According to the NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), rising water levels are likely in the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej Rivers, with a risk of low to medium-level flooding at points including Taunsa, Guddu, Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad.

Small rivers and streams such as Nullah Aik, Palkhu, Dek, Hadyara, Bein, and Basantar may also see medium to high flows. Tarbela Dam is already 96% full, while Mangla Dam has reached 64% capacity due to recent rains.

The forecast warns of intermittent rainfall in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, and Khanewal. Heavy downpours are also expected in Sahiwal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Taunsa, Bahawalpur, DG Khan, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan, raising the risk of urban flooding in major Punjab cities and flash floods in DG Khan and Rajanpur’s hill streams.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, districts including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Buner, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mardan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Kohat, and Hangu may face heavy rain, gusty winds, flash floods, and possible landslides in hilly areas.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, floods may hit Hunza, Shigar, and Ghanche districts due to heavy rain and glacier melt, increasing flows in rivers like Hunza, Khunjerab, Shimshal, Braldo, Hushe, and Saltoro.

The NDMA has urged the public to stay away from rivers and streams, follow official advisories, and be ready to evacuate from vulnerable areas if needed. It said all relevant departments are on high alert and in constant coordination.
