Weather department warns of Glacier melting in Lakes outburst flood risk in Gilgit-Baltistan
GILGIT-BALTISTAN: Unusually high temperatures are causing ice and glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan to melt at a much faster rate, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned.
According to the department, current maximum and minimum temperatures in the region are 7 to 9°C higher than normal. This continuous and widespread heat has accelerated melting across the entire region.
In the first 10 days of August alone, Tarbela Dam received 41.8 million acre-feet (MAF) of water, much of it from glacier melt during the summer crop season. This is 5.64 MAF more than the usual inflow for this time of year.
The rapid glacier melt has also increased the risk of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which can cause sudden and dangerous flooding in nearby areas.
Officials have urged close monitoring of the situation to protect lives and infrastructure.
