Israeli forces have launched an attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of ships carrying aid and medicines for the besieged people of Gaza, according to international news agencies.

Organizers of the flotilla said Israeli troops surrounded the convoy and boarded one of the vessels, detaining all those on board. Earlier, the flotilla organizers had declared a state of emergency on all their ships as they approached the blockade zone.

Tiago Avila, a member of the flotilla’s steering committee, sent an audio message from his vessel stating that the mission had reached a critical stage as they were nearing the Israeli naval blockade.

Amnesty International had earlier called for protection of the flotilla, stressing in a statement that the continued silence and inaction of states had forced international activists to take peaceful steps to break the blockade. Amnesty said states have a responsibility to provide safe passage to the flotilla and take effective measures to end Israel’s blockade and violations.

The flotilla also includes notable participants from Pakistan, such as former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed and Azad Kashmir’s Information Minister Pir Mazhar Saeed.
