Major reason behind soaring Tomato prices revealed
KARACHI: Tomato prices have skyrocketed across the country, giving citizens another strong jolt of inflation. In many areas, tomatoes are now selling for more than the price of chicken per kilogram.
In the open market, tomatoes are being sold between Rs400 and Rs650 per kg, while in the wholesale market, the price has reached Rs350 per kg.
According to Haji Shah Jahan, President of the Wholesale Vegetable Market, the main reason behind the sharp increase is that it’s currently the off-season for tomatoes.
He explained that the markets are currently receiving supplies from Iran and Balochistan, while the Sindh crop is expected to arrive in the markets by mid-November.
Haji Shah Jahan also warned that hoarders are active in the open market, taking advantage of the shortage and trying to push tomato prices even higher.
