ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, constitutional supremacy, parliamentary governance, transparency, accountability, the rule of law, and public participation in decision-making.
In a message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, the prime minister said the Constitution guarantees a democratic system based on representative governance, where sovereignty belongs to the people and elected representatives exercise authority as a “sacred trust” for public welfare.
Sharif said Parliament serves as the principal constitutional forum where laws are made, national issues are debated, and oversight is exercised to ensure the proper use of public resources.
He said Pakistan’s parliamentary system has made progress in promoting inclusive participation and representation across all segments of society.
The prime minister highlighted the representation of women, minorities, smaller provinces, and other underrepresented groups in Parliament.

He said reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the National Assembly and Senate reflect constitutional commitments to inclusion, while the Senate strengthens federalism by ensuring equal representation of federating units and national unity.
Sharif emphasized that democracy depends on transparency and public access to information.
He said Parliament has improved openness by making legislation, debates, committee reports, and other records publicly accessible.
The prime minister also noted Pakistan’s participation in international parliamentary diplomacy through platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union and parliamentary friendship groups.
He said these engagements help promote peace, dialogue, sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, and global cooperation.
Sharif called for renewed commitment to constitutional supremacy, parliamentary democracy, federalism, inclusivity, transparency, accountability, and public welfare, underscoring Parliament’s role as the foundation of Pakistan’s democratic system.
