KABUL: Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have devastated parts of northeastern Afghanistan, killing at least 20 people, injuring more than 80 and leaving over 100 others missing, officials said.
According to Afghan authorities, the flooding struck Nuristan province, causing widespread destruction in the provincial capital, Parun, and surrounding areas.
Search and rescue operations were continuing as emergency teams worked to locate those swept away by floodwaters.
Afghanistan’s disaster management agency said at least 20 bodies had been recovered while more than 80 people were injured in flood-related incidents. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as many people remain unaccounted for.
The floods destroyed hotels and dozens of shops, while powerful torrents left large boulders and thick mud across Parun, severely damaging roads and commercial areas.
The disaster agency has also warned of additional heavy rain and storms in several provinces, urging residents to stay away from rivers, flood-prone areas and other high-risk locations as the threat of further flooding persists.

Earlier, Heavy monsoon rains triggered flash flooding across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province over the past 24 hours, killing at least 12 people and damaging homes in multiple districts, provincial disaster officials said, as authorities in Peshawar warned the wet weather could persist through Thursday due to an ongoing monsoon system affecting the region.
According to Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD), Peshawar recorded 72 millimeters of rain in the past day, while Khyber district saw 71 millimeters. Other areas also reported significant rainfall, including Takht Bhai with 57 millimeters, Charat with 41 millimeters, and Kakul with 38 millimeters.
Forecasters said most districts should expect additional rain accompanied by thunder, with cloudy skies persisting across both plain and upland areas.
