Government candidate Sadiq Sanjrani was re-elected chairman of the Senate, while Mirza Muhammad Afridi was elected deputy chairman, while Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) candidates Yousuf Raza Gilani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri have faced defeat.

98 members of the Upper House voted for the election of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate. Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani got 48 votes while his opponent Yousuf Raza Gilani got 42 votes and 7 votes were rejected. And one vote was rejected for marking both candidates.

In addition, Mirza Mohammad Afridi got 54 votes for the Deputy Chairman Senate seat while Abdul Ghafoor Haideri got 44 votes and no vote was rejected.

The newly elected chairman of the Senate was later sworn in by the presiding officer.

Senator Sadiq Sanjarani, after taking oath as Chairman Senate again, thanked the senators who voted for him and said that he would like to thank the entire House and the leadership of PTI and especially Pervez Khattak.

He said that he was also grateful to Imran Khan and his party chief Jam Kamal Khan.

Sadiq Sanjarani said that the way he has been running the House for 3 years, he will continue this process and will take everyone along.

The newly elected Chairman of the Senate Sadiq Sanjrani then announced the election of the Deputy Chairman and reiterated the rules of election and directed the Secretary Senate to call the names of the members for casting the vote, after which the names of the members were called and the Members voted for the Deputy Chairman of the Senate.

Counting the votes on the completion of voting and announcing the result, Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjarani said that 98 votes were cast for the Deputy Chairman Senate while no vote was rejected.

He said that Mirza Mohammad Afridi got 54 votes while Abdul Ghafoor Haideri got 44 votes.

After that Sadiq Sanjrani took oath as Deputy Chairman from Mirza Muhammad Afridi.

It is to be noted that a new polling booth was set up in the upper house following the concerns of government and opposition members after secret cameras were allegedly found near the polling booth.
