KARACHI: An automobile association has urged the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to support their demand of rationalising the duty structure on auto parts, a statement said on Tuesday.

A delegation of the Pakistan Automobile Spare Parts Importers and Dealers Association (Paspida) visited the KCCI and sought Karachi chamber’s support for the rationalisation of the duty structure on auto parts.

Paspida chairman Muhammad Ahsan said that the duty on import of auto parts is almost 90 per cent, adding that such heavy duties are encouraging smuggling of auto parts in Pakistan, which has made doing business and competing in the market extremely difficult for the registered businesses.

KCCI president Muhammad Idrees pledged full support to the genuine demands of Paspida and congratulated Muhammad Ahsan for taking charge as the chairman Paspida, Sindh Circle.

“After assuming the charge as KCCI president, I, along with my team, am constantly making efforts to resolve the problems being faced by the business community,” Idrees said.

“Doing business has become quite challenging due to instability in [the] rupee-dollar exchange rates, gas, electricity tariffs and water crisis, Customs and taxation-related complexities and rising inflation, etc, so we must provide some relief and ease in doing business to our business community,” he added.

Paspida patron-in-chief and a former senior vice president of the KCCI Arshad Islam shared concerns over exorbitantly high rates of taxes and Customs duty imposed on automotive parts.

The KCCI president said they have started preparing the budget proposals and asked the Paspida leadership to do the same for incorporation of their demands in the upcoming budget.

He also assured the delegation of highlighting the issues pertaining to the automotive sector.
