Many people dream of seeing the stunning northern lights, and they spend years chasing the cosmic phenomenon.
Residents of Scotland got their wish last week when they saw the brilliant northern lights, often known as Aurora Boreas.
This phenomenon, named after the Roman goddess of dawn (Aurora) and the Roman god of the north wind (Boreas), occurs when solar particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in colourful radiation lights, particularly near the planet’s north and south poles, where the magnetic field is strongest. The lights can be seen at any time of year, although September, October, March, and April are the most common.

Alaska, the Arctic, Sweden, and Finland come to mind when thinking about seeing the northern lights, but Scotland is rarely mentioned.
Scotland is located at the same latitude as several of the world’s top northern light destinations, including Norway and Alaska, according to VisitScotland, the country’s official tourism organisation.
Following last week’s encounter with the northern lights, Twitter was swamped with stunning Aurora Boreas images.
