On Sunday, Halle Berry was honoured with the prestigious SeeHer award at the 27th Critics Choice Awards. The actress gave a passionate and heartfelt speech after receiving the award from presenter Issa Rae. While utilising her platform to raise awareness about the need for representation in the film business.
Halle Berry revealed how she got her part in her own directorial debut, Bruised, in 2020 during her speech. Berry said that she was perplexed as to why the character in the script couldn’t be black, prompting her to confront the filmmakers. “I knew the role wasn’t intended for someone who looked like me the first time I read the script for Bruised… So I approached the producers and inquired, “Why not me?” ‘How come it can’t be a black woman?’ ‘Why not?’ they said. ‘Go find a director,’ they told me later. ‘Why not me?’ I eventually had the guts to say. ‘Why not?’ they said.”

Berry went on to say that she once asked a buddy about his movie-watching experience. She said, “Finally, when the movie was released, I asked someone what they thought of it. ‘I have a terrible time watching a woman get pummelling and beaten,’ he remarked. It made me feel a little uneasy.'” The actress went on to say, “And it was then that I realised why I had to tell the story. I was well aware of the story’s potency. ‘Imagine being that lady, experiencing that narrative,’ I continued. ‘If you had a hard time, if seeing that story made you uncomfortable, imagine being that woman, living that experience.'”
Berry, on the other hand, continues to advocate for more tales about women’s lives. Expressing her pride in being part of a generation that can tell their own experiences and stand up for themselves. She went on to say, “Because you already know why. We’ll write, produce, direct, and, if we’re courageous enough, star in the film all at the same time!”

As she embraced her own intricacies, Berry stated in a lovely comparison, “We’ll make stories about ourselves in all of our complexity and inconsistencies. We are both confident and fearful. We are both vulnerable and powerful. We are both gorgeous and bruised. We’re both everything and nothing at the same time!” She presented her prize to all the little girls who feel invisible and unheard, and closed her speech with a standing ovation, “This is our way of telling you that we care about you and that we see you! And you are deserving of everything nice in the world!”
