A South Carolina mother of three who had been attacked by three pit bulls awoke recently to find that both of her arms had been amputated – and was so angry that doctors had to sedate her and put her back on a ventilator.

Kyleen Waltman, 38, was walking home along a gravel road surrounded with trees near her house in rural Honea Path, some 80 miles northwest of Columbia, South Carolina, when she was attacked by the trio of dogs.

Waltman’s sister, Amy Wynne, wrote a devastating GoFundMe article about her health struggles after the attack, including high blood pressure, fever, and respiratory difficulties.

Kyleen was so viscerally unhappy when she eventually woke up, she had to be sedated, according to her.

‘Now they have taken off everything on the arms,’ Wynne wrote,’so she can no longer have ordinary prostheses.’

‘So here we are, trying to find out how to protect her from dwelling on the terrible aspects of her life.’ I realise that she had arms for 38 years and now she doesn’t, and I understand how she feels. She’s still putting up a fight. ‘Prayers are working, and she is gradually recuperating.’

Wynne also stated that her sister has a lengthy road to recovery, as well as the other health challenges that Waltman is still dealing with.

‘Her blood pressure is still quite high, and she has a temperature of 102+,’ Wynne wrote on the GoFundMe website. ‘Her oxygen levels keep plummeting, so she’s back on the ventilator.’ ‘Mama thinks it’s as though she’s surrendering.’ Before you go thinking her family and I aren’t going to give up, let me say this: we aren’t going to give up. For a purpose, the Lord has led her thus far. Her tale isn’t over yet.’

Waltman’s closest friend, Tanya Gilmer, told WGN Radio that the incident happened as she was walking from her boyfriend’s house to her mother’s.

‘As far as I know, the dogs simply leapt on her, and you can see where she battled the dogs on the road if you walk down there,’ Gilmer added.

According to authorities, Avery Presley, a local farmer who was driving his tractor down the road to feed his cows, noticed Waltman being attacked in a ditch and was able to drive the dogs away by shooting his revolver into the air.

Presley told the Greenwood Index Journal, “I ain’t no hero.” ‘I’m still kicking myself for not arriving earlier.’ For my own safety, I always carry a pistol.’

According to The State, Justin Minor, the dog’s owner, was arrested two days after the incident and charged with three charges of having a dangerous animal that attacked and wounded a human, rabies control violation, and dangerous animal not authorised beyond premises unless confined.

The crime of owning a hazardous animal carries a $5,000 fine and a three-year jail term.

He was freed on a $15,000 bail last month after appearing handcuffed and teary-eyed before Magistrate Susan Gladden at a court hearing. As Gladden read his accusations to him, he sniffled, wiping his tears and shook his head.

Minor was not represented by an attorney during the hearing; he told the judge that he had previously been assigned a public defender and that he was now employed.

Gladden informed the dog owner that if he wanted, he could request a jury trial or a probable cause hearing.

He was also advised that as his trial progressed, he would be unable to communicate with Walter or her family. The bail hearing was attended by no one from Walter’s family.

On May 6, he’ll make another appearance.
