The White House attacked Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday for his stated proposal to bus illegal immigrants apprehended at the border to Washington, DC, calling it a “publicity stunt.”

During her daily briefing, press secretary Jen Psaki was asked what preparations the government had taken to find migrants someplace to stay after Abbott launched the programme in reaction to the impending repeal of the Title 42 public health authority next month.

“I’m not sure what power the governor would have to do it under.”

“I think it’s quite evident this is a PR stunt,” Psaki stated in answer to Fox News’ Peter Doocy’s query.

“His own office recognises that a migrant would have to willingly be transferred, and then he can’t compel them to because, once again, enforcement of our country’s immigration laws rests with the federal government, not a state,” she went on.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the health order in March 2020, following the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

It has enabled border agents to deport over 2 million migrants seeking to enter the United States without first considering their asylum applications.

However, Doocy pointed out that if the order is revoked, Republican legislators anticipate that up to 18,000 migrants per day might arrive at the border, up from the current estimate of 8,000 per day.

Abbott stated on Wednesday that he has directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to begin halting and inspecting commercial trucks in search of illegal immigrants who may be transported across the border.

The governor swore that once they were apprehended, they would be loaded onto charter buses and sent to Washington.

“President Biden has refused to visit the southern border to observe the disaster he has caused.” So, we’re bringing the border to him,” Abbott declared on Twitter Thursday, pointing to a Fox News interview.

“Texas will bring illegal aliens to the United States Capitol,” he added.

Abbott argued he had no choice but to act because the Biden administration’s policies will allow thousands of migrants to breach the border in a flood that will overwhelm small towns across Texas.

“We’re sending them to the United States capital, where the Biden administration will be able to handle the needs of the individuals they’re permitting to cross our border more quickly,” Abbott said.
