People were killed when another riot broke out at a prison in Ecuador, killing about 20 people.

Inmates at El Turi prison haven’t been taken away from their guns, officials say, but the fights have calmed down.

A fight broke out when one gang tried to take “total control” of the prison.

It’s been a big rise in prison violence in Ecuador in the last few years, though.

This past year, 320 inmates were killed in prison riots and fights between gangs inside the prison.

During the early hours of Sunday in their time zone, people heard screams coming from the cell blocks near where they lived.

A gang member tried to storm the wings where rival gang members were held, according to inmates’ relatives. They said they had been called by their loved ones.

Analysts have said that the recent rise in prison violence is because powerful transnational crime cartels have infiltrated Ecuadorean gangs and become part of their groups there.

The bodies found in El Turi were said to have been mutilated, which is a tactic used by Mexican crime cartels to make their rivals afraid.

Interior Minister Patricio Castillo said that the people who led the riot had been found and would lose any prison benefits they had been given.

He said that Ecuador would not let any more violence happen, and that it would “drain the cesspit” that the prison system had turned into.

On the BBC in November, Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasco said that his government was taking back control of not only the prisons, but also parts of the country where drug smugglers had set up shop.

When he talked about drug trafficking, he said that previous governments had been “passive.” But he said that rising drug use in the country would take “more than a decade” to deal with.
