Mauritius police have arrested and charged a man in connection with the death of County Tyrone teacher Michaela McAreavey.

Sandeep Mooneea would appear in court later on a “provisional charge of conspiracy,” police said in a statement. The charge stems from an allegation of theft.

Mr. Mooneea was one of two hotel employees acquitted of Mrs McAreavey’s murder in 2012.

She died in Mauritius while on her honeymoon.

Mrs. McAreavey was killed in January 2011 while staying at the Legends Hotel in the north of the island with her husband, John.

A former security guard was arrested last month on suspicion of conspiring to steal a key card to the hotel room where Mrs McAreavey was murdered.

Dassen Narayanen, 37, has maintained his innocence.

On Tuesday, a lawyer representing Sandeep Mooneea wrote to the Mauritius Commissioner of Police to express his dissatisfaction with the decision to interview him.

“We believe a miscarriage of justice is occurring before our very eyes,” barrister Rama Valayden wrote in the letter.

Sandeep Mooneea and Avinash Treebhoowoon were acquitted of murder in the summer of 2012 following a seven-week trial on the holiday island.

Both vehemently denied the charges.
