EU: Working from home is a good way to beat Putin

The EU is urging individuals to drive less, turn down the air conditioning, and work from home three days a week to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

The measures, which were developed in collaboration with the International Energy Agency, would save an average household €450 (£375) per year.

Purchasing energy from Russia contributes to the country’s economy and helps to fund the conflict in Ukraine.

However, Europe has stated that it is unable to find other suppliers and is requesting that residents modify their habits.

The “Playing My Part” nine-point strategy encourages residents to drive less, take public transportation, or work from home three days a week.

It also encourages citizens to:

• Use less heat in the winter and less air conditioning in the summer.
• On highways, drive more slowly with the air conditioning turned down to save fuel.
• Rather than flying, take the train.
• Take public transportation, walk, or cycle to your destination.

It also encourages cities, as several already do, to promote car-free Sundays.

“People in Europe want to take action in response to the awful sights of human misery that have emerged as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, said.
