Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay on Sunday partnered for a level-par 72 to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event on the PGA Tour.
After a blistering third round 60 on Saturday, the American duo dug hard throughout Sunday’s foursomes to hold on for a two-shot victory at TPC Louisiana in Avondale.
Schauffele and Cantlay’s final round 72 was their best of a low-scoring week that includes a 13-under-par 59 in the first round and a 12-under-par 60 on Saturday.
“Today was probably the worst of our four quarters,” Schauffele said afterwards.
“Pat was very calm, which helped me stay calm. It’s been a while since I’ve been in contention here. It was overall just calmness and patience.”
Cantlay’s victory was extra sweet after his heartbreak at last week’s PGA Heritage, when he lost in a playoff to Jordan Spieth.
The victory also solidified Cantlay and Schauffele’s on-course partnership, as the duo went undefeated in two Ryder Cup matches last year.
“Today was a great day,” Cantlay said. “We definitely bring out the best in each other. We really enjoy being out here together,” he added.
“I said earlier this week, if there’s anyone I could share success with, it would be Pat,” Schauffele said. “I’m happy we could get it done.”
The Americans finished the tournament on 29 under par, two shots ahead of Sam Burns and Billy Horschel, who had looked to be on their way to a victory until a bogey on the 17th.
Burns and Horschel finished with a four-under-par 68 to finish in a tie for second place at 27 under.
Doc Redman and Sam Ryder played a five-under-par 67 to finish third on 24 under, one stroke ahead of a group of six partnerships tied for fourth on 23 under.
Garrick Higgo and Branden Grace of South Africa were among those who lit up the field with a nine-under-par 63 on Saturday before fading with a one-over-par 73 on Sunday.
