Allan and Tom are beside themselves. When they argue they can’t bury Malva in a sacred cemetery because of her evil nature, Jamie intervenes. Malva will be properly laid to rest. He and Claire will take care of it, and Roger will officiate at the funeral.
We hear the whispers of Claire’s demons swarming about in her head as Jamie places the bloodied corpse on Claire’s operating table. Devil. Witch. Murderer. As Claire shakily threads her needle to sew up Malva’s cut throat, the shadows curl around her hands. When the darkness becomes too much for the surgeon, he switches to alcohol instead of ether. Jamie’s feathers are ruffled, too, as he joins Claire for some afternoon whiskey.
The bad news is that no evidence of wrongdoing has been discovered. This means Claire is the only one who can be blamed. Claire goes deeper into the darkness as soon as the fisherfolk arrive, asking to see the body and inquiring if Claire forgave Malva before she killed her. Lionel Brown’s figure shows up everywhere, haunting her night and day.
Who had the ability, motivation, and opportunity to assassinate Malva? Claire finally understands that she may have done something unspeakable as Lionel continues to torment her mind. Claire compares it to having a bad sensation you can’t get rid of. It’s as if she forgot to turn off the stove (or, in this era, a candle blazing). Something isn’t right.
Thankfully, she tells Jamie that she drank some ether to “take a little lie down,” and he seems concerned that she is putting herself to sleep. Claire admits that she only vaguely recalls Malva pounding on the door to gain entry. She then recalls being awake and frightening the young lady.
Jamie believes Claire’s mind is playing games with her and advises her to get some rest. However, a statue of Lionel in the corner of her chamber prevents her from sleeping the traditional way. We also have to worry about Lizzie (Caitlin O’Ryan) and the Beardsley twins.
What a scandalous plot line! These crazed adolescents have gotten themselves into a tangle and aren’t ashamed of it. The only issue is that Lizzie is pregnant, and she has no idea if the baby is Kezzie’s or Josiah’s. Ian is the one who discovers the secret and informs his uncle right away. Lizzie will marry one of the brothers, or both of them will die, according to Jamie’s plan. It’s that simple.
Claire tells Lizzie that she was not coerced into doing anything. Lizzie adores both of them since they share the same soul. So, what appears to be the issue?
Lizzie, are you serious? On the Ridge, someone is murdering young unmarried pregnant girls. That, in my opinion, is a major issue! The fisherfolk could also stone you to death if they found out. My friend, you’ll need a strategy.
Meanwhile, Roger has fully embraced his role as honorary minister and tells Jamie that he might want to make it a full-time job. Roger has a serious problem with the Old Testament’s “thou shalt not kill” section, and it’s not going to get any easier once war breaks out. However, he is more than willing to defend those in need. Does that make him a coward?
Roger’s decision to be ordained as a preacher is something Jamie is more than prepared to support. He’d be overjoyed if Roger stayed on the Ridge to assist Brianna and Claire, as well as the old. The threat of war is constantly present. If you’re needed, go where you’re needed.
They’re both needed in the chapel right now. Malva’s funeral is attended by only ten persons. There aren’t enough men to take her to the cemetery when it’s time to hoist the casket. When Allan provides an extended, broad pair of shoulders, he barks for Jamie to keep seated. Ian takes the last corner, and they start down the outside steps. Claire discovers the small baby’s casket and reaches for it. Allan is a scumbag. He believes both Malva and the baby are dead because of Claire.
Claire sobs in Jamie’s embrace. She appreciates his willingness to confront the demons and darkness. He makes an attempt to console her. She has not been charged with a crime.
In front of the Ridge, a group of enraged men galloping up on horses. Claire is wanted by the Safety Brigade, who have a warrant out for her arrest. Unfortunately, it appears that everyone in the area believes Claire is responsible for the death of Malva Christie. And I’m not sure if an ether sleep will help her get out of this nightmare.
