Former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly says UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres should resign if a humanitarian passage from Mariupol is not established following his travel to Moscow.
According to Ukrinform, the diplomat stated this in an interview with Radio NV.
“Consider this scenario: the UN has failed to respond to security concerns, and the only [challenges] left are humanitarian. Mr. Gutteres should quit if he does not create a [humanitarian] corridor to Mariupol if they do not show any results here as well “Chaly remarked.
He stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine is a threat to global security, to which the UN must respond, but that the UN Secretary General chose to visit Ukraine just two months after the conflict began.
“Mr. Gutteres finally agreed to visit [Ukraine] after two months of conflict, after Bucha, and after everything else, since the criticism was significant. They stated in a number of media that if such a journey does not take place, the UN will be forgotten entirely “Chaly said.
Gutteres’ decision to visit Moscow and subsequently Kyiv, he added, was “not a mistake, it is, sadly, a very deliberate action.”
The former ambassador also stated that he had personal encounters with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and regards him as a capable politician and diplomat.
“However, events have changed so drastically that you can no longer merely be a skilled politician; you must also produce results. If you are unable to produce outcomes, exit the historical arena and allow others to do so.” Chaly said.
