Ukraine’s war: the village on the outskirts of Russia and Belarus

The Ukrainian settlement of Senkivka is located at the crossroads of the Ukraine-Russia-Belarus border crossing. It was once the scene of festivals commemorating the three countries’ friendship, but now it’s a battleground, with inhabitants recounting stories of families separated across borders living in dread. Yogita Limaye, who has rare access to the village, has witnessed firsthand the impact of a society ripped apart by war.

Russian troops left northern Ukraine in early April, but mortar bombardment and grenade strikes continue in Senkivka. It had a population of just over 200 individuals before the invasion. Only a few people have stuck behind now.

Nina Malenok’s house is right next to a road that Russian troops used to begin their invasion of Ukraine, on their way to Chernihiv in the north and Kyiv in the south.

The tail of a rocket fired in the early hours of February 24, the day the war began, is wedged into Nina’s yard.
