Top House Republicans are commenting on news that the Biden administration’s “Disinformation Governance Board” has been halted following widespread criticism over free speech issues, claiming it is the “best move” by the Biden administration due to its plainly political intent. According to The Associated Press, the misinformation board has been placed on hold, and director Nina Jankowicz has resigned.
“The suspension of the DHS Disinformation Governance Board was by far the finest choice taken regarding this Orwellian body. The ‘Ministry of Truth’ lacked a defined objective or even direction from its initial bungled deployment. It was evident that it was a political instrument to be used by the ruling party “Rep. John Katko, R-NY, ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, and Rep. Mike Turner, R-OH, ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Turner and Katko continued: “This board was only effective in emphasizing that the goals of the Department of Homeland Security are fundamentally wrong. When the border crisis worsens on a daily basis, cyber-attacks from adversaries threaten to cripple our critical infrastructure, a rise in violent crime puts Americans across the country in danger, and disrupted supply chains have devastating consequences for Americans, DHS is focused on policing Americans’ free speech.”
“If DHS cannot manage its present mission set, why should we trust it to unilaterally extend its mandate and tell the public what is and is not true? It is past time for this government to prioritize national security above establishing itself as the final judge of truth and expression. Republicans on the Homeland Security and Intelligence Committees will continue to try to ensure that this Board never gets off the ground “Republicans came to a conclusion.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the board will be suspended for 75 days awaiting a review by a bipartisan Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC).
Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security “has asked for the final recommendations of the HSAC within 75 days. The Board will not convene and its work will be paused during the HSAC’s review, but the Department’s critical work across several administrations to address disinformation that threatens our country’s security will continue,” said the spokesperson, who also stated that has been “grossly and intentionally mischaracterized.””
Furthermore, the White House harshly condemned the board’s opponents while asserting that the board’s aims were not flawed.
During a House Appropriations Committee hearing last month, Mayorkas initially disclosed that DHS had established a disinformation board to counteract internet misinformation.
“The idea is to put all of (DHS’s) resources together to fight this issue,” Mayorkas said during the April 28 hearing, adding that the department is concerned about the spread of misinformation in minority groups ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
