Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has decided to attend the Summit of the Americas next month in Los Angeles, where he will meet with US Vice President Joe Biden, according to close associates of the South American leader.

Three of Bolsonaro’s Cabinet colleagues confirmed his decision to The Associated Press, after weeks of speculation about his attendance, with some media suggesting he had ruled it out.

Brazilian officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to comment publicly, confirmed the bilateral meeting with Biden.

The US Embassy in Brasilia’s press office declined to comment.

A bilateral meeting between US and Brazilian leaders in Los Angeles would be a first.

The summit, which the US is hosting for the first time since the initial gathering in 1994, is in danger of imploding due to worries about the guest list, with some regional leaders threatening not to attend.

In addition to Bolsonaro, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has vowed to boycott if Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua are not included. López Obrador told reporters at his daily press conference on Wednesday that the trip was still being discussed.

Bolsonaro, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was one of the world’s last heads of state to acknowledge Biden’s electoral triumph in 2020.

Following Biden’s election, Bolsonaro’s administration made an effort to display a fresh commitment to halting deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, including increasing its pledges at the United Nations climate negotiations in Glasgow. However, bilateral talks broke down as data revealed that devastation was ongoing.
