The USS Zumwalt was named after Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, the country’s youngest commander of naval operations. The ship is a guided-missile destroyer, which means its primary mission is to provide antiaircraft support to the fleet of the United States Navy.

Construction of the ship began in October 2008. It was launched in October 2013 and commissioned by the United States Navy in October 2016.

The USS Michael Monsoor and the USS Lyndon B. Johnson are the Navy’s additional Zumwalt-class destroyers.

According to the Associated Press, the ship cost twice as much as some of the Navy’s most formidable ships, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

According to Bloomberg, the three Zumwalt-class destroyers cost around $22.4 billion in research and development. General Dynamics, the owner of the shipyard Bath Iron Works, which built the USS Zumwalt, created a $40 million facility specifically for the construction of the huge ships.

According to Defense News, the ship’s “knife-like” bow makes it more stable in severe seas than other surface combatants such as destroyers and cruisers.

According to Naval Technology, the 600-foot ship can house 158 crew members. It travels at a constant speed of 30 knots and has a displacement of 14,564 long tonnes (around 16,000 tons).

According to the US Indo-Pacific Command, the Zumwalt generates around 78 megawatts of power, which is comparable to the energy provided by a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

According to Naval News, the ship’s sensors include a multifunction radar. It also features 80 advanced vertical launch cells for specific types of missiles, according to the publication.
