Tribunal issues stay order against demolition of Abbottabad hospital

• An Abbottabad resident asked the tribunal in his petition to halt the demolition of the hospital.
• The tribunal also asked Deputy Director of EPA Mumtaz Wazir to provide his written response on it.
• Justice Mansoor Ali Shah had said, “The application of the petitioner be decided strictly in accordance with the law.”

ABBOTTABAD: The intended demolition of the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Abbottabad was given a stay order by the Environmental Tribunal in Peshawar.

Mahmood Aslam, an Abbottabad resident, asked the tribunal in his petition to halt the demolition of the hospital where a new hospital building is planned without first obtaining the Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) required by the Environmental Protection Act, which states that any hospital with more than 100 beds must do so.

The tribunal adjourned the hearing and ordered XEN of the big projects in Peshawar to hold off on any form of demolition till the next order. They also asked Deputy Director of EPA Mumtaz Wazir to provide his written response on it.

On June 21, on a petition filed by Mahmood Aslam in the Supreme Court, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah had said, “The learned counsel for the petitioner does not want to press this petition and prays that he be allowed to approach the authority concerned under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Antiquities Act, 2016 regarding his claim that certain properties be registered, protected and declared antiques under the said act. If the petitioner approaches the authority in this regard, the application of the petitioner be decided strictly in accordance with the law. This petition is disposed of accordingly.”
