Yasmin Finney Talks About Her “Groundbreaking” Doctor Who Role

According to an interview, Yasmin Finney, who is best known for playing Elle Argent in Heartstopper, is eager to break new ground in her intriguing new role as Rose in Doctor Who. Being cast on a show like Doctor Who, according to transgender actor Finney, is “groundbreaking” and has the ability to “transform the world.” Alongside the returning David Tennant and Catherine Tate, she will make her acting début in the 2023 anniversary specials.

While Bethany Black served as the series’ first openly transgender actor when she joined in 2015, having Finney play a trans character in a key position will give the show the higher degree of representation it needs.”​​I’m happy to be the representation on a show that means a lot to so many,” Finney said in reference to the groundbreaking nature of casting a trans actor in a show with such a sizable fan base.

Finney auditioned for Doctor Who prior to the release of Heartstopper. Euros Lyn, who directed Netflix’s teen comedy, alerted Russell T. Davies to her talent. Davies said of Finney:

“when you get into the casting room, there’s only one question: can you act? And that’s where she stole the show. She was immediately right. My greatest worry was whether 57 other shows would snap her up instead. Watching Finney since has been an education. To see someone commanding such attention – and let’s face it, such enmity, with grace and wit and a wonderful smile”.

The Thirteenth Doctor transformed into the returning Tennant after Jodie Whittaker’s portrayal of the title character in The Power of the Doctor came to an end. In November 2023, when Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary, Davies will take over as series showrunner to succeed Chris Chibnall. Tate will also make a return as Donna Noble. Wilfred Mott will also make a posthumous cameo as the late Bernard Cribbins, who tragically passed away back in July. Neil Patrick Harris, who will play the Celestial Toymaker, was also presented in the most recent video. Unfortunately for Finney fans, not much information has been made public about Rose’s role in the new episodes

With Ncuti Gatwa, the star of Sex Education, taking over as The Doctor at the start of Season 14, Tennant’s return is expected to pave the way for a more long-lasting version of The Doctor.
