‘Scoob!: Holiday Haunt,’ a cancelled movie, completes production
A new Scooby-Doo movie has already been completed. Even though it won't...
Linda Cardellini enjoys new Scooby-Doo movie’s lesbian Velma
Scooby-Doo has been one of the most known icons in popular culture, for more than 50 years. The teenage detectives recently made waves when it was revealed that Velma was a lesbian in their brand-new animated movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! Linda Cardellini, a former Velma actress, has now offered her approval for the news regarding the revised character.
Cardellini stated, “Velma has been around since 1969; I just went trick or treating with my daughter and there were a lot of Velmas out there, so I love that she still has this place in culture that is sort of always active for decades,” in an interview to promote the third and final season of her Netflix series Dead To Me.
“And I love — you know, I think it’s been hinted at so many times, and I think it’s great that it’s finally out there,” the speaker continued.
In the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo and its follow-up Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Cardellini amazingly portrayed the glasses-wearing, orange sweater-loving character.
Although those movies were criticised by critics at the time, young people in the Millennial and Gen Z generations who grew up watching them now consider them to be cult classics.
James Gunn, who is now well-known for superhero epics like The Suicide Squad and The Guardians of the Galaxy, also wrote that mystery-solving trilogy.
Gunn has been extremely candid in the past about how he initially wanted Velma to be a lesbian, but WB severely underdeveloped that aspect of the character to the point where it was scarcely discernible in the finished film.
Because WB gave Velma a boyfriend, the sequel performed much worse in that regard. Cardellini has now joined the many Velma devotees and former Velma actors like Hayley Kiyoko in rejoicing over this wonderful development.
After apprehending the villainous costume designer Coco Diablo, who created every costume discovered at the centre of all their classic mysteries throughout the years, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Inc. finds itself in a severe rut when riddles stop coming to them.
But when the gang’s double-ghosts appear, Mystery Inc. turns to Diablo for assistance in cracking the case.
Velma falls in love with Diablo. There are no ifs, ands, or buts regarding Velma’s sexuality in this movie, which is to WB and the filmmakers’ credit.
This kind of portrayal in children’s animation has come a long way, and it works well with the narrative.
The best thing is that the film itself is among the top Scooby-Doo direct-to-DVD releases that WB has produced in a while.
With Scooby-Doo on the soundtrack, the animation is fantastic, the story is amusing, and there are many loving allusions to the scary origins of the series.
Cardellini responded, “Oh God, definitely!” when asked in the same interview if she would be interested to taking on the role again.
She then added, “I’m probably too old,” after that. For some time now, the possibility of a third live-action Scooby-Doo movie has been floated by both Gunn and Cardellini’s co-star Matthew Lillard. Shaggy’s voice is still provided by Lillard nowadays. You’re absolutely not too old to play this character, in response to Cardellini.
Velma has recently received a lot of admiration. In addition to Velma finally being recognised as a lesbian, the character will get her own self-titled adult HBO Max animated series, with the legendary Mindy Kaling providing her voice.
You may read the entire Cardellini interview with EW on their website until that specific bloody series debuts next year.
On HBO Max right now, you can watch Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, and Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! Below is the trailer for Trick or Treat.
