The Olive Culture Holistic and Multi-Professional Mechanism for a Pakistani Olive Oil Value Chain Project, sponsored by the Italian government, seeks to increase olive oil output and improve food security in Pakistan through technical assistance and stakeholder training.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research hosted a meeting of the project’s steering committee. The conference was co-chaired by the National Food Security and Research Secretary, Zafar Hasan, and the Italian ambassador to Pakistan, Andreas Ferrarese.

The project, which started in March 2022, aimed to create a multi-professional value chain for olives and olive oil in Pakistan in order to increase olive production and enhance food security through technical support and stakeholder training.

Through the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM-Bari), Italy, the Italian Agency for International Cooperation, the Pakistan Oilseed Department, and the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the governments of Pakistan and Italy are working together to carry out the project, which has a budget of €1.5 million.

The secretary noted that this project will help to replace the import of edible olive oil, which the nation now does each year with its limited foreign reserves. He hoped that the project will be expanded and carried out by the private sector.

The Italian envoy stated that Italy will continue to promote Pakistan’s olive industry and that Pakistan has a big potential for olives.

Marco Marchetti, the project director, updated the forum on the project’s status and announced that the preliminary evaluations were finished and that the government of Pakistan had received assistance in developing the Olive Policy in terms of policy.

According to Marchetti, in Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), field instruction on excellent agronomic techniques, advice on olive processing protocols, and hygiene safety were all delivered during the project’s first olive harvesting season (Sept 2022–Nov 2022).

In order to streamline the value chain for Pakistani olive oil, according to Marchetti, the project is involving rural communities. The project also includes initiatives to raise public knowledge of olive culture, he noted.

Additionally, the project will collaborate with the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, to classify existing olive varieties and develop new ones. Marchetti stated that the next stage will concentrate on increasing the ability of the farmers and the provincial agriculture departments while presenting the plan for the next year.

The secretary stated that the Pakistani side will make all effort to make it a success while appreciating the Italian government for the support. The project, according to him, is in line with the PSDP Project Promotion of Olive Farming on Commercial Scale in Pakistan (Phase II), which aims to bring olive cultivation to all of the provinces and autonomous regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) and Gilgit Baltistan.
