Google add Matter support to Android and Nest Home smart devices
Google add Matter support for Android and Nest Home smart devices will be interoperable with smart ecosystems from other manufacturers beginning today. This was made feasible by Google’s support for the Matter protocol on the aforementioned devices. The Communication Standards Alliance developed Matter, an open-source, royalty-free next-generation unifying protocol for smart home device connectivity (CSA). The alliance, which was formed in 2019, has roughly 300 members, including key players Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and Huawei.
Google Nest and Android devices have been automatically upgraded to support the Matter protocol, according to an official blog post from the search giant. Google Home devices such as the Google Home Smart Speaker and Google Home Mini Smart Speaker are already Matter-enabled as of today. According to the firm, Matter will be supported by Google Nest devices such as the Google Nest Mini, Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Hub, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and the Nest Wifi Pro.
Google has also added Matter support for Fast Pair on Android, allowing customers to connect Matter-enabled devices to their home network, Google Home, and other smart devices more rapidly.
Matter employs a wireless technology that combines the internet protocol (IP) and the Thread protocol. Different brands of smart devices have used different technologies or protocols to develop their smart devices, resulting in the smart gadgets being incompatible with one another.
The Matter smart home standard also enables devices that were previously largely reliant on internet connectivity and the cloud to function even when disconnected. The reduced reliance on the internet and cloud connectivity minimises the delay between human action and smart device response. This is likely one of the most significant advantages that Matter brings to the smart home ecosystem, and it has the potential to genuinely revolutionise smart device adoption and simplicity of use in general.
Google also stated that it is constantly enhancing the smart device operating protocol in collaboration with industry partners.
The search engine giant also announced that it is collaborating with South Korean conglomerate Samsung to create a built-in Multi Admin function that would provide users cross-platform control over their smart devices and smart home ecosystem. The multi-admin capability will be available in 2023, according to the business.
Meanwhile, Google has revealed that Matter will be available on iOS via the Google Home app. However, the search engine giant did not provide a timetable for the same.
