Critics’ Circle film awards: “Tár” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” took home the top prizes
The Banshees of Inisherin and Tár were the favorites for the 43rd London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, which were held on Sunday at The May Fair Hotel. The former won five prizes, while the latter only received three. The 200 members of the Critics’ Circle’s cinema section, the country’s oldest critics’ organization, decide who receives the London Critics’ Circle Awards.
Tár won Film of the Year, the top honor at the 2023 London Critics’ Circle Film Awards. Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a talented composer whose personal troubles start to affect her professional life, in Todd Field’s powerful drama, which also won Director of the Year awards. Actress of the Year was given to Blanchett for the third time by the London Critics’ Circle when she won the award for the movie. Blanchett had already won the honour for her roles in Blue Jasmine and Elizabeth.
The Banshees of Inisherin, which led the way by being acknowledged as the winner in five categories, was the other significant winner at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards. The Attenborough Award for British/Irish Film of the Year and Screenwriter of the Year went to Martin McDonagh, who also directed the dark comedy about two friends who have a disastrous relationship breakdown on a small island near Ireland in the 1920s. The other three accolades for The Banshees of Inisherin went to Colin Farrell in the categories of Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress for Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon, respectively, in the Actor of the Year category.
Bill Nighy and Florence Pugh were among the night’s other prominent winners. For their services to cinema in 2022, Nighy and Pugh were named the best British/Irish actor and actress, respectively. Nighy won the prize for his starring role in the film Living, while Pugh received recognition for several roles, including one opposite Harry Styles in the film Don’t Worry Darling, directed by Olivia Wilde, and roles in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Wonder.
The Banshees of Inisherin, Tár, Farrell, and Blanchett are all Oscar contenders in 2023, while Michelle Yeoh, another Oscar contender, won large at the London Critics’ Circle Awards. Yeoh received The Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, which was presented to her by renowned British director Danny Boyle, for her performance as the lead in Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which she has received numerous honors and nominations this awards season. Decision to Leave and The Quiet Girl shared the prize for Foreign-Language Film of the Year in the last major category. Will these winners all be successful at Britain’s main film awards ceremony?
