Aaron Finch announced his retirement international cricket

Aaron Finch, the captain of Australia’s men’s Twenty20 team, announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, capping a 12-year career that saw him rank among the game’s top run scorers in the shorter-game formats.

At his best, Finch was a lethal opening batter, but his status had been in doubt ever since Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup at home last year.

It was unclear right away who would succeed the hitter from Victoria, who has led the squad in 76 of the 103 T20 matches since making his debut against England in 2011.

“Because I won’t be playing until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the proper time to step aside and give the squad time to plan and grow for that event,” he told media at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“It’s been an amazing honor to be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play with and against some of the best players of all time.”

The 36-year-old led Australia to their first-ever T20 World Cup victory in Dubai in 2021 after being named the finest T20 batter in the game in 2018.

In T20 international matches, only five players have amassed more runs than Finch.

Last September, Finch stepped down as Australia’s one-day captain, and Pat Cummins, a 29-year-old fast bowler, took his position.

The Australian Test team is also captained by Cummins, but the selectors might be hesitant to give him the T20 captaincy as well.

The two cricket memories Finch will “cherish the most” were winning the 2015 T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup.

He beat Zimbabwe in 2018 and set the record for the highest T20 international score with 172 runs off 76 balls.

He also scored 156 against England in a T20 international match, which is the third-highest score ever.
