Security law: New Zealand suspends extradition treaty with Hong Kong

New Zealand has suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong in response to China’s controversial security law.

Travel advice has been given to people of New Zealand to alert them about risks presented by the law.

China’s embassy in New Zealand reacted to the move and said that the suspension was “gross interference in China’s internal affairs”.

“The New Zealand government’s decision is a serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations,” a statement said.

According to the international news agency, military and dual-use goods and technology exports from New Zealand to Hong Kong will now be treated in the same way as New Zealand treats such exports to China.

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said China had “eroded rule-of-law principles, undermined the ‘one country, two systems’ framework that underpins Hong Kong’s unique status, and gone against commitments China made to the international community”.

Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom had earlier suspended extradition treaty.

China has warned that the UK will “bear the consequences” if it keeps going “down the wrong road” in Hong Kong.

The UK has suspended an extradition treaty with Hong Kong over the controversial security law.

The Chinese ambassador in London said in response that the UK had “blatantly interfered” in China’s matters.

Liu Xiaoming said: “China has never interfered in UK’s internal affairs. The UK should do the same in China.”
