In a strategic move to bolster cybersecurity measures across Pakistan, Muhammad Mukaram Khan Director General (DG) of Cyber Vigilance at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), unveiled the Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2023.
Emphasizing the critical need for proactive steps in safeguarding digital lives and sensitive information, DG Mukaram Khan urged both employees and the general public to take responsibility for their cybersecurity.
Addressing the nation via PTV news channel, DG Mukaram Khan detailed the objectives of the Cybersecurity Awareness Week, highlighting PTA’s commitment to sharing its cybersecurity experience and success stories through various social media awareness drives. The initiative aims to fortify the digital space, shielding institutions and individuals from the looming threat of cybercrime.
As part of the awareness campaign, PTA is encouraging small to medium-sized businesses, individuals, and families to adopt cybersecurity best practices. This includes the use of strong passwords, the implementation of multi-factor authentication, vigilance against unsolicited messages, and the importance of keeping software up-to-date.
DG Mukaram Khan stressed the inclusion of topics such as cyber-bullying, phishing, online fraud, safe social media practices, and personal data protection in the awareness campaign. The initiative, aligned with PTA’s recently issued Cybersecurity Strategy for the Telecom Sector, marks the first step towards its implementation.
The Cybersecurity Awareness Week, slated to run from December 18 to 24, will leverage PTA’s social media platforms to disseminate bilingual content, including GIFs, short videos, and static images, covering diverse cybersecurity topics over the seven-day period.
DG Mukaram Khan highlighted the importance of a safe and secure digital transformation journey, asserting PTA’s readiness to champion and support a vision for a safer online future globally.
In response to a question, DG Mukaram Khan advised users to exercise caution when sharing content and downloading applications, emphasizing the potential risks associated with sharing personal information on social media platforms. He cautioned that once uploaded, information becomes a permanent part of the digital footprint and may be exploited for negative purposes.
The unveiling of PTA’s Cybersecurity Awareness Week marks a significant stride towards fostering a cyber-aware and resilient digital ecosystem in Pakistan.
