In Edinburgh’s former Jenners department store, there is a fire that emergency personnel are battling.

According to a spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, at around 11:29, they reacted to reports of a fire in the empty building’s back yard on Rose Street.

Although there have been no confirmed casualties, at least 22 fire engines were sent to the scene of the accident, which shut down nearby roadways.

According to the fire department, when crews arrived, the building was well ablaze.

Smoke was seen coming out of the department store’s basement, according to eyewitness accounts.

Later, the police perimeter was expanded to include the entirety of St. Andrew Square. A staff evacuation has taken place from neighboring offices.

The fire service said it deployed 22 appliances and other “specialist resources” to the scene, where crews remain.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said a number of roads had been closed in the surrounding area, adding: “Please avoid the area if possible and heed advice re alternative routes.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service is also at the scene. A spokesperson said: “We received the call at 11:49 and have dispatched 14 resources.”

At around 11:30, according to Wagamama manager Sarah Mullins, 34, she first saw smoke.
