Will Smith gives an emotional speech at the Oscars

The Oscars 2022 gave us it’s fair share of surprises, one of them being when Will Smith came to the stage to claim his Best Actor Award. For his portrayal in King Richard just moments after his dramatic incident with presenter Chris Rock. Smith broke down in tears as he won the evening’s highest honour during an emotional acceptance speech.

While winning the award, Smith also delivered an emotional apology for the incident in which he attacked Chris Rock earlier in the evening. Holding back on his tears, Smith stated, “I’d like to express my regret to the Academy. I’d like to express my regret to all of my fellow nominees. This is a lovely moment, and I’m not sobbing because I won an award. For me, it’s not about getting an award. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Tim and Trevor and Zack and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard,’ Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams.”

The actor also discussed how working on a film like King Richard allowed him to protect Aunjanue Ellis, whom he described as one of the strongest, most delicate individuals he’s ever encountered. The actor went on to say, “In my life, I’m being called to love people, to protect people, and to be a river for my people. I understand that in order to perform what we do, you must be able to take abuse. You have to be able to get people to talk about you in a weird way. You have to be able to put up with people disrespecting you in this business. And you have to grin and seem as if everything is fine.”
