KARACHI: The Energy Department of the provincial government has finalised the Sindh Waste to Energy Policy 2021, which will be presented before the Sindh Cabinet in the upcoming meeting, an official of the provincial Information Ministry said.
The meeting was chaired by Sindh Minister for Energy Imtiaz Sheikh.
During the meeting it was informed that Karachi produces over 10,000 tonnes of waste on a daily basis and this waste can be processed to produce 200MW. It was also informed that the electricity generated from Jam Chakro can easily be provided to the distribution company.
There are two landfill sites to dump the waste produced by Karachi, one of which is Jam Chakro with 500 acres of land and the other one is Gond Pas, which has an area of 450 acres. The waste produced by Karachi gets dumped in these two sites.
The meeting was informed that a few companies have contacted the provincial government to process the waste and produce 150MW in the first phase.
Energy Minister Imtiaz Sheikh said: “The basic aim of the government is to clean the wastage. And to produce electricity from this waste is the best way to do it.”
“Power generation from waste will fill the void of the city’s power needs, and processing the waste and converting it into clean energy will help preserve the climate. The finalised Sindh Waste to Energy Policy 2021 will be presented in the upcoming Sindh Cabinet meeting,” he added.
