After experiencing symptoms, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday afternoon, according to the State Department.
According to the department, Blinken is only experiencing “mild” symptoms despite being completely vaccinated and boosted against the coronavirus. According to the report, Biden does not have a close relationship with the top US diplomat.
On Tuesday, the president tested negative for Covid, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
Eight days after Vice President Kamala Harris tested positive for the coronavirus, Blinken was diagnosed.
Prior to his positive test on Wednesday, the secretary of state met with Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde, and on Tuesday, he met with Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.
“We are in the process and we have notified those individuals with whom he has been in close contact following [federal health agency] guidance,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.
On Saturday night, Blinken and his wife Evan Ryan, as well as Biden, attended the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington.
There were approximately 2,600 people in attendance, including prominent journalists and government leaders. Vaccination or a negative Covid test were necessary for attendees.
At the occasion, Antony Blinken and his wife were guests of NBCUniversal, CNBC’s parent company. The diagnosis was not confirmed by an NBC spokesman.
Ryan serves as the White House Cabinet Secretary, liaising between Biden and the heads of the United States departments and agencies who make up the president’s Cabinet.
Blinken “will quarantine at home, he will follow [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guideline,” said spokesman Price, who also attended the White House correspondents’ gala. “I know he very much looks forward to returning to the office, returning to his full schedule and returning to the road just as soon as he is able to do so.”
Antony Blinken had been slated to appear at the Kuwaiti embassy in Washington for a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees event before receiving a positive result for Covid through a PCR test.
According to Price, the State Department has contacted persons who had been in close touch with Blinken before to his positive test.
Defense Department officials who attended the journalists’ dinner, according to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, have not tested positive for Covid.
General John Raymond of the United States Space Force was also present.
