Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that Turkey will resolve its security issues in northern Syria with a fresh cross-border operation.

Erdogan made the announcement in an address to his party members in Ankara, adding that the new operation will compensate for the “shortcomings” of the security barrier on its southern borders, according to the Xinhua news agency.

He said that Turkey’s troops “destroyed the terror corridor” that Syria’s Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) were attempting to establish, referring to Turkey’s four prior operations in northern Syria along the Turkish border.

In northern Syria, the Turkish army launched Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016, Operation Olive Branch in 2018, Operation Peace Spring in 2019, and Operation Spring Shield in 2020. According to Turkish officials, the operations aim to eradicate terror threats and create a secure zone to ease the return of Syrian refugees to their homes.

Erdogan stated on Wednesday that Turkey’s planned new military campaign in Syria will target the YPG in Tell Rifaat and Manbij districts in Aleppo’s northern metropolis before gradually expanding to other parts of the neighbouring nation.

Turkey has designated the PKK as a terrorist organisation, and it has been fighting the Turkish government for more than three decades. Ankara regards the YPG as the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.
