Starbucks withdraws new chicken sandwich over quality concerns

Starbucks has pulled a recently released morning chicken sandwich from its stores after determining on Friday that it did not live up to its standards of quality.

According to the Seattle-based business, on June 26 it voluntarily “cease sold” their chicken, maple butter, and egg sandwich. Starbucks said any accusations that a specific disease was brought on by the item are just untrue.

Unconfirmed allegations on social media state that a few people got sick after eating the sandwich. Five reports of the sandwich making customers feel sick, at least temporarily, were recorded by the crowdsourced website iwaspoisoned.com, which is dedicated to documenting foodborne illness outbreaks and is credited with helping identify multiple outbreaks.

Starbucks issued a statement saying, “Any stories attributing the cease sale to disease are wrong. The quality concern that was detected by Starbucks would not result in food related illness.”

Starbucks said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not issued a recall despite the agency not immediately responding to a request for comment. No complaints regarding the item were found in its database as of Friday afternoon.

According to Starbucks, the decision to pull food products due to quality concerns was made “with an abundance of caution” and is neither exceptional nor newsworthy.

Starbucks’ rather quick action to eliminate an offering that didn’t satisfy company standards, according to Bryan Hitchcock, vice president of the Institute of Food Technologists in Chicago, is “commendable.”

According to Hitchcock, guaranteeing food safety at the time of purchase involves many different factors.
