A Billionaire is Born: Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot Hits Record High
Because there was no big winner on Tuesday, the jackpot has risen to $1.35 billion.
You can still become a Mega Millions billionaire.
Nobody matched the six numbers — 7, 13, 14, 15, 18 and Mega Ball 9 — to win the $1.1 billion jackpot on Tuesday night, which means the prize will continue to rise.
According to the Mega Millions website, when the numbers are selected again Friday night, the jackpot will be worth around $1.35 billion, the second-highest top reward in the game’s history. Since October 14, the jackpot has been growing.
The $1.1 billion jackpot won on Tuesday was the third-largest in Mega Millions history, trailing only the $1.5 billion won in October 2018 and the $1.3 billion won in July 2022.
The greatest lottery prize paid in the United States was the result of a Powerball draw in November, which was worth $2.04 billion in cash.
According to personal financial and tax consulting portal Kiplinger, the latter “lump sum” option includes 24% immediately withdrawn by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, with more potentially owing in taxes at year’s end based on a winner’s filing status and claims.
According to the magazine, under that “lump sum” option, the highest money a winner was projected to receive from the jackpot was very close to one-third of the $1.1 billion, $363.4 million. This figure is likely to rise somewhat on Friday.
