In an unforeseen turn of events, the Punjab Excise Department finds itself entangled in a logistical hiccup, causing a temporary halt in the delivery of vehicle registration cards. Two weeks ago, we reported that the department had ceased deliveries as the contracted company responsible for manufacturing the cards ceased its operations. However, a recent update from the Excise Department sheds light on the situation.

In a tweet, the department revealed that the delivery delay is a result of an ongoing tendering process. This unexpected challenge has disrupted the seamless flow of registration cards to vehicle owners, causing understandable inconvenience across the region.

The department acknowledges the inconvenience caused and assures citizens that the tendering process is well underway. They anticipate the uninterrupted supply of registration cards to resume within the next three to four weeks. The department sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience during this period.

It’s worth noting that the department had previously entered into a five-year contract with the ‘Inbox Company,’ which concluded in May. The contract aimed to supply 8.5 million cards at a cost of Rs. 438 per card. Despite a brief extension yielding an additional 400,000 cards, it failed to stave off the impending challenges. Before the temporary extension concluded, the excise department managed to issue more than 80,000 registration cards.

Adding to the complications, the cost of smart registration cards for cars and motorbikes in Punjab is expected to undergo a substantial increase. This surge is attributed to the remarkable rise in the US dollar’s exchange rate against the Pakistani rupee.

While such disruptions in public services can be frustrating for citizens, it’s crucial to acknowledge the efforts being made to rectify the situation promptly. As we await the resumption of normalcy, let’s exercise patience and understanding, recognizing that these challenges are often temporary bumps on the road to efficient governance.
