Karakoram Highway Shut: Blockages Update & Travel Advice
The vital link connecting Pakistan and China, the Karakoram Highway, is now at a halt. The 1,300-kilometer route, running from Hasan Abdal in Punjab to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, is presently obstructed at Bhasha, located in the Upper Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hazara Division.
The sudden closure has trapped numerous travelers in the harsh landscape. Among those stranded are the elderly, children, and women, all of whom stopped in the midst of their journey. Additionally, hundreds of vehicles are also stuck due to the shutdown.
Authorities have attributed the closure to ongoing rehabilitation work. The highway, a vital connection between Pakistan and China, is currently undergoing renovations, resulting in this temporary inconvenience.
Further complicating matters, severe weather and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan made several sections of the highway impassable earlier on Wednesday. As a result, authorities have advised against travel until the conditions improve and the roads are considered safe for traffic.
Essentially, the Karakoram Highway, an essential national route, is currently suspended, leaving travelers stranded and vehicles motionless. With ongoing rehabilitation efforts, attention is focused on authorities for prompt action to reestablish this vital connection.
