The government is considering blocking the bank accounts of non-filers and has decided to implement a fixed sales tax on mobile phone imports, replacing the existing 18 percent tax under the amended Finance Bill 2024.

According to sources speaking to ProPakistani, the original Finance Bill 2024 included a proposal to freeze non-filers’ bank accounts, though it was not approved at the time.

Now, the government is revisiting this measure. If non-filers do not respond to notices, their bank accounts may be blocked until they are listed on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL).

While non-filers will still be able to deposit money in banks, they will be unable to withdraw it until they become filers and appear on the ATL.

If this proposal is incorporated into the amended Finance Bill 2024, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will issue an income tax general order (ITGO) with the names of non-filers to block their bank accounts.

In addition to targeting non-filers, the amended Finance Bill 2024 will alter the sales tax structure for mobile phone imports. Instead of an 18 percent sales tax, a fixed tax amount will be applied, varying by brand.

These measures aim to enhance tax compliance and streamline the taxation process, encouraging more individuals and businesses to contribute to national revenue.

The changes to the sales tax on mobile phones are expected to simplify tax calculations for importers and potentially make high-end mobile phones more affordable.
