Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah has slammed the Indian Muslims who supported the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Taliban took control of the capital Kabul on 15 August 2021, some Indian Muslims celebrated the development on social media, after which the Indian government arrested several people.

Now, Bollywood veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has castigated Indian Muslims for supporting the Afghan Taliban.

In his video statement, Naseeruddin Shah said that the re-establishment of the Taliban government was a matter of concern for the world, but the celebration of Indian Muslims in support of these “barbarians” was no less dangerous.

He added, “Every Indian Muslim today should ask himself the question, does he want reform and innovation in religion or the values of savagery?” I am an Indian Muslim as Mirza Ghalib has said.

Naseeruddin Shah Shah said, “if they want a reformed, modern Islam, or live with the old barbarism of the past few centuries.”

He also distinguished “Hindustani Islam” from what is practised in other parts of the world.

The actor added, “May God not bring a time when it changes so much that we cannot even recognise it.”

Naseeruddin Shah mentioned his own religious believes and said, “I am an Indian Muslim and as Mirza Ghalib said years ago, my relationship with God is informal. I don’t need political religion.”

Note that the Taliban seems more ‘open-ended’ as compared to their previous regime the reason is that they want to be accepted as a political power instead of their image as extremist Islamists.
